Desired Outcome and Objectives (Revised)

The desired outcome of the initiative is that the rights of refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK are upheld.

The initiative has three objectives, with specific approaches and planned activities for each:

Objective 1

Change immigration legislation to meet international standards on children's rights and ensure the priority of the best interests of the child

In working towards this objective, we will work with partners to:

  1. Support work to remove the UK Government's UNCRC reservation that keeps children's rights from being protected
  2. Encourage legal challenges to asylum decisions where the best interests of the child have not been taken into account
  3. Ensure that children are not detained or made destitute for immigration purposes
  4. Ensure that asylum determination is based on child-specific and accurate information from country of origin
  5. Improve decision-making on age disputed cases
  6. Promote the introduction of independent assessment for mandatory returns of children and young people
  7. Promote support structures for children and young people in relation to the above areas of policy, including
    i) a statutory system of guardianship for a young person separated from their parent or carer, including those leaving care
    ii) legal representation for all children seeking asylum by specialist representatives
    iii) refugee community organisations working with children and young people

Objective 2

Encourage the fair and humane treatment of refugees and people seeking asylum

In working towards this objective, we will focus on policy makers and opinion formers and:

  1. Support the direct lobbying of the UK government via advocacy in each of the four countries of the UK
  2. Support targeted campaigns and awareness raising initiatives
  3. Support refugee community organisations working towards attitudinal change

Objective 3

Disseminate good practice

In working towards this objective, we will:

  1. Establish a rigorous monitoring and evaluation system for the Refugee and Asylum Seekers Initiative, examining beneficiary case studies and testimonials, and advancing understanding of what has worked and where
  2. Disseminate evaluation and good practice information through the press, journals, lectures and other channels
