Grants awarded under the Palliative Care Initiative

Palliative Care improves the quality of life of patients (both adults and children) and their families facing HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

Ensuring people have access to palliaitve care

Palliative care is an essential part of treatment, care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses. Committed to supporting schemes providing palliative care and anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment via home-based and hospital/clinic based care, PCI has recently awarded grants to:

Chipini Health Centre, Chingale, Malawi
To provide medicines, volunteer support and training, and towards the costs of a new computer and printer. Chipini Health Centre is situated in the rural area of Zomba District, an area of high HIV/AIDS prevalence, reached via 21k of unmade road. The grant will also provide a new motorbike, which will help staff to overcome the huge challenge of reaching patients to provide home-based care.

Ndola Ecumenical Hospice Association, Zambia
To scale-up the hospice's palliative care programme. Funds will support staff and caregivers', as well as contribute towards core and administration costs.

Education and Traning

As part of its work to ensure palliative care is an essential part of, and integrated into, health care systems in sub-Saharan Africa, the Fund's Palliative Care Initiative (PCI) is working to promote the inclusion of palliative care in the curriculum for all health professionals. It is also supporting the development of culturally relevant training programmes for health professionals, informal carers, communities and families.
