Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund - The Work Continues

Cluster Munition Coalition awarded International Peace Prize

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund is delighted to congratulate the Cluster Munition Coalition on being awarded the Tipperary International Peace Award by the Tipperary Peace Convention.

Marking the 25th anniversary of the Award, on 1st May 2009, the Tipperary International Peace Award will be presented to the Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC). The award is given in recognition of their campaign to outlaw the use of cluster bombs.

Samantha Rennie, Head of Partnerships at the Fund says

"The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund helped set up the CMC in 2003 and has supported the coalition of civil society organisations seeking to ban cluster bombs ever since. We are thrilled that campaigners' tireless determination to secure an international ban on this weapon, which causes unacceptable harm to civilians, is duly recognised."

The CMC continues work to further the cause of the global ban on cluster bombs and the rapid entry into force of the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which was signed by 94 countries in Oslo in December 2008.

Previous recipients of the Tipperary International Peace Award include: Presidents, Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev and Bill Clinton, the late Senator Gordon Wilson, Live-Aid organiser Bob Geldof, Norwegians Mona Juul & Terje Larsen, US Senator George Mitchell, John O'Shea of GOAL, Archbishop Robin Eames and former Prime Ministers, the late Rafic Hariri of Lebanon and the late Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan.
